Growing Up in a Family Business: Why I Love Helping Maryland Entrepreneurs

By Kaitlyn P. Tauber, Esq., Liberty Legacy Law Group

I grew up in the heart of Linthicum, Maryland – a small-town community nestled just outside the bustle of BWI Airport. If you’ve ever driven through this corner of the state, you may have passed a place that means the world to me: Tauber’s Towing.

Before it became a towing company, it began as a humble gas station. My grandfather, Julius “Junior” Tauber, took over his aunt and uncle’s garage and service station—then known as Tauber’s Amoco—which had been established around 1930. Rebranded as Tauber’s Service Station, it quickly became more than just a business; it was a neighborhood staple. A place where locals could fuel up, check their tires, and leave with both a receipt and an honest conversation.

A Legacy of Hard Work and Heart

My grandfather was more than just a business owner. He was a World War II veteran, a proud American, and even served as the mayor of Linthicum. He was a community leader – not because he sought recognition, but because service was in his blood.

When he came home from the war, he didn’t look for the easy road. He rolled up his sleeves, bought a modest plot of land with his loving wife, Virginia Tauber, and together, they built a life. The service station became the heartbeat of our family’s legacy, and later, Tauber’s Towing would carry that torch.

Growing up, I watched my grandfather pour every ounce of himself into that business, with the steady administrative support of my grandmother by his side. I remember the grease on his hands, the late-night phone calls, the way he’d hop in a tow truck at a moment’s notice to help someone—whether it was a neighbor with a stalled engine, a car accident on the highway, or a stranger stranded near the airport. I also remember the constant dedication of my grandmother, diligently keeping the books balanced, ensuring payroll was met, licenses were up to date, and taxes were properly filed.

They weren’t flashy. They didn’t talk much about what they’d done. But the way they lived—the pride they took in their work, the way they helped people without expecting anything in return—taught me everything I needed to know about business and leadership.

A Family That Shows Up

As I got older, my dad took the wheel—literally and figuratively. He not only kept the business going with the same integrity and grit, but also grew the towing side into a highly successful and well-respected company known throughout the state. Then my brother stepped in to help, and the legacy continued.

Tauber’s Towing wasn’t just a job for my family. It was a lifeline for the community. They were there for car accidents, breakdowns, weather disasters, and all the messy moments of life. I saw firsthand the emotional toll those moments took on people – and how a calm, kind, honest helping hand could turn someone’s worst day into something manageable.

And we never overcharged. In fact, we often did favors. If someone couldn’t pay, we’d figure it out. If a neighbor needed help, we didn’t think twice. It was just what you did when you were part of a community like Linthicum.

I didn’t always realize it at the time, but watching my grandfather, grandmother, father, and brother work so hard to keep the business alive – it shaped me. Their work ethic, their compassion, and their loyalty to this town planted a seed in my heart that has never left.

The Unspoken Lessons

When you grow up in a family business, you learn things that no textbook can teach you:

  • You learn that commitment isn’t 9 to 5 – it’s around the clock.
  • You learn that your name means everything.
  • You learn to measure success not just by profit, but by how many people trust you.

That’s the culture I was raised in. It wasn’t about flashy branding or social media strategies. It was about answering the phone at midnight, showing up in the snow, and doing what was right even when no one was looking.

I didn’t know it back then, but those values were laying the foundation for the kind of lawyer I would become – and the kind of clients I would one day serve.

From Tauber’s Towing to Law School

By the time I was considering law school, I knew I didn’t want to follow the traditional path of high-powered litigation or corporate boardrooms. I wanted to do something that felt personal. Something that helped people like my family – entrepreneurs who pour everything they have into something real.

I saw law as a way to build bridges. To help people protect their businesses, their families, and their futures. My background in real estate and business ownership gave me practical insight, but my roots gave me heart.

That’s why I chose to focus on helping small business owners, especially in Maryland. I’ve seen firsthand how hard they work – and how vulnerable they can be without the right legal protections.

Too often, small businesses don’t have access to attorneys who speak their language. Who understand what it means to sign the front of a paycheck. Who know what it feels like to be responsible not just for income, but for reputation, relationships, and legacy.

Giving Back to the Community That Built Me

Today, I co-own a law firm with my lifelong best friend, Melissa, another Linthicum native. And together, we built Liberty Legacy Law Group with one clear mission: to serve families and business owners with integrity, strategy, and heart.

When I sit down with a small business owner – whether it’s a contractor, a hairstylist, a mechanic, or a mom-and-pop shop owner – I see my grandfather and grandmother in them. I see my dad, my brother. I see the stress behind their eyes, the pride in their voice, the dreams they’re working toward.

And I want to help.

Not just with contracts and LLCs – but with real support. With peace of mind. With tools that make them feel confident that what they’ve built will last.

Why This Matters

In communities like Linthicum, small businesses aren’t just economic engines – they’re identity. They sponsor the local Little League team. They put Christmas lights on Main Street. They know your name, your kids, your story.

When we lose those businesses, we lose something sacred.

That’s why I do what I do. To protect those stories. To guard those legacies. To make sure the next generation of Maryland entrepreneurs doesn’t just survive – but thrives.

Because I know what it’s like to grow up in a family business. I know the sacrifices, the sleepless nights, the pride and the pressure. And I know how much it means to have someone in your corner.

In Honor of My Grandparents

I wish my grandparents could see what I’m doing today. Maybe they can.

They never saw themselves as a big deal. But to me, they were everything. A war hero and his devoted wife. Community pillars. A team—stronger together. A husband and wife who built a life, a business, and a legacy with quiet strength, love, and unwavering dedication.

I carry their legacy with me in every client I serve. I see their fingerprints in every document I draft, every business I help protect, every Maryland entrepreneur I get to empower.

Tauber’s Towing may not be in the headlines. But in Linthicum, it’s a legend. And in my heart, it’s the reason I became who I am.

If you’re a Maryland business owner and you’ve poured your heart into what you’ve built – I see you. I honor you. And I’m here to help you protect it.
